About

Unit III introduces two important areas of industrial chemistry: chemical nomenclature and catalysis. Before a chemical substance can be studied, manufactured, or used in an industrial process, it must be identified by a universally accepted name. Chemical nomenclature provides a systematic method for naming compounds, ensuring that scientists, engineers, industries, and regulatory agencies around the world refer to the same substance without confusion. Along with systematic names, industries also use generic and trade names for commercial purposes, making the study of nomenclature essential for both academic learning and industrial applications.

The second part of this unit focuses on catalysis, one of the most significant concepts in modern chemical industries. A catalyst increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed in the process, making industrial production faster, more economical, and energy efficient. Many large-scale manufacturing processes, including the production of ammonia, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, petroleum products, polymers, pharmaceuticals, and food products, rely heavily on catalytic reactions. Without catalysts, many of these industrial processes would require much higher temperatures and pressures, resulting in greater energy consumption and production costs.

This unit explains the classification and nomenclature of organic and inorganic chemicals according to accepted naming conventions. It also discusses the difference between generic, common, and trade names, enabling students to recognize chemicals as they appear in laboratories, industries, and commercial products.

The catalysis section begins with the basic concept and characteristics of catalysts before exploring different types of catalysis, including homogeneous, heterogeneous, enzyme, positive, negative, and autocatalysis. Students will learn the principles governing catalytic reactions, the theories proposed to explain catalytic action, and the mechanisms through which catalysts lower activation energy and increase reaction rates.

Special emphasis is given to factors that influence catalyst performance, such as temperature, pressure, surface area, catalyst poisoning, promoters, and inhibitors. The unit also introduces enzyme catalysis and explains its growing importance in pharmaceutical, food, and biochemical industries. Finally, several industrially important catalytic processes are discussed to demonstrate how catalysis contributes to efficient and sustainable chemical manufacturing.

By the end of this unit, students will understand the importance of systematic chemical naming, identify different classes of catalysts, explain the mechanism and theories of catalysis, and appreciate the indispensable role of catalysts in modern industrial chemistry. The knowledge gained in this unit provides a strong foundation for understanding industrial chemical processes and their practical applications.
