About

Chemical kinetics is the branch of physical chemistry that deals with the study of the rates of chemical reactions, the factors that influence these rates, and the mechanisms through which reactions occur. Unlike chemical thermodynamics, which determines whether a reaction is feasible, chemical kinetics explains how fast a reaction proceeds and the sequence of elementary steps involved in converting reactants into products. This unit provides a comprehensive understanding of reaction rates, molecularity, and the order of reactions, along with the mathematical treatment of zero-, first-, and second-order reactions. It also introduces important concepts such as half-life, mean life, and various methods for determining the order of a reaction. Furthermore, the unit explores the effect of temperature on reaction rates through the Arrhenius equation, activation energy, collision theory, and transition state theory, providing a strong theoretical foundation for understanding the dynamics of chemical reactions.
